Understanding Acid Reflux Syndrome

Perhaps you have experienced a burning sensation in your throat accompanied by a burning and sickening liquid in your mouth. This unpleasant experience has been happening quite frequently and you notice that it occurs after you eat certain foods or after going to bed.

At first you thought it was just heartburn or indigestion, but due to the frequency you are beginning to think that it is something more serious. One condition that these symptoms may be reflecting is that of acid reflux syndrome. In order to understand this condition it is first of all important to know what is acid reflux syndrome, the associated symptoms and what are the methods of treatment.

What Is Acid Reflux Syndrome?

Acid reflux syndrome is a medical condition that is directly associated with the stomach and esophagus of the human body. Specifically, acid is found in the stomach and helps in the digestive process of food. Reflux can be defined as the moving of this acid backing up into the esophagus and sometimes into the mouth.

Therefore, acid reflux syndrome is an unpleasant state in which the sufferer experiences a burning sensation in the throat. In addition, the individual may experience the unpleasant reality of having partially digested food in their mouth.

Symptoms Of Acid Reflux Syndrome

In order to determine whether you are suffering from acid reflux syndrome, there are specific symptoms associated with this medical condition. Some of those conditions include severe heartburn, pain in the stomach, a steady cough, raspiness of the voice, unpleasant or bitter taste in the mouth, difficulty in swallowing, etc.

There may be other symptoms that an individual may experience. It is important to seek medical care as this constant acid being refluxed back into the esophagus may eventually create ulcerations of the esophagus.

Treatment

There are many methods that can be utilized to treat acid reflux syndrome. Some of these methods can be classified as natural treatments and use of medications.

One natural method that can be used in the treatment of acid reflux syndrome is through diet. Specifically, avoiding certain foods and liquids can help to minimize or stop the reflux of acid into the esophagus. Some of those foods that can cause acid reflux syndrome include the use of alcohol, caffeine and acidic foods. Also overeating and being overweight may cause acid reflux syndrome. If weight gain is a contributing factor to this syndrome then the loss of weight may dramatically aid in preventing the reflux of acid.

Also, individuals who suffer from the syndrome may report that its intensity increases while trying to sleep. By simply elevating the upper part of the body through an extra pillow or other comfortable device the condition may be controlled.

In addition, there are medications that can be used to treat acid reflux syndrome. Over the counter medications may include the use of an antacid. Prescribed medications for treating acid reflux syndrome may include the use of an H2 blocker or proton pump inhibitor. These medications help to minimize the secretion of acid in the stomach.
