How Allegra D and Insomnia are RelatedAllergy Medications Allergy medications come in many different varieties of both over-the-counter and prescription varieties. These medications are not designed to cure allergies. Rather they are designed to repress them and help one's body to deal with them. Some of the most common over-the-counter allergy medications include Benadryl and Claritin. Benadryl has been used for decades safely however, it has been known to cause excessive sleepiness. Claritin was a prescription medication until just a few years ago when it was finally released over the counter. Claritin comes in both a regular Claritin option and a Claritin-D option. The Claritin-D option includes a decongestant. Common prescription allergy medications include Allegra and Zyrtec. Allegra D is the decongestant form of Allegra, it is also offered by prescription only. Prescription medications are generally thought of as stronger than over-the-counter medications. How do Allergy Medications Work? Allergy medications work in a one or two-step process. The first step that every allergy medication includes is the antihistamine effect. Antihistamines work by preventing your immune system from releasing a substance called histamine, which causes your blood vessels to actually enlarge. This causes many of the symptoms allergy sufferers are familiar with. The symptoms include the redness, itching, and nasal drip that many individuals with allergies suffer from. Allergy medications that include decongestants also have another step in how they work. Many allergy medications indicate whether or not they have a decongestant built-in with the D after their name. For example Claritin-D and Allegra D both have decongestant formulas. These decongestants work by causing the swelling in your nasal passages to be reduced. This also causes a reduction in redness, for example in the eyes. These types of medications help people to be able to breathe more easily without the stuffy nose effect. Allergy sufferers should be wary, however, as there are many side effects to regular allergy medications and allergy medications that include a decongestant. In particular takers of allergy pills such as Claritin-D and Allegra D may have insomnia. The insomnia caused by Allegra D and Claritin-D is generally due to the decongestant ingredient. Insomnia is a common side effect of decongestants. In order to reduce the insomnia effect by Allegra D and Claritin-D allergy sufferers should be careful to not take their allergy medication close to bedtime. If a person is suffering from insomnia on Allegra D or a similar medication, they should consult their doctor. |
