Can Cream For Arthritis Pain Really Provide Relief?

Included in the many ways to treat arthritis pain are topical relief creams. These creams are applied directly on the skin covering the pained joints. While arthritis pain relief creams aren't a new invention by any means, their effectiveness is still doubted by many skeptics. Whether or not arthritis pain relief cream can really provide a long-term solution to arthritis pain continues to be a matter of debate.

Considering The Different Kinds

There are three main types of creams, ointments, and gels that provide relief for arthritis pain. All of them differ from one another somewhat; however, they are all similar in that they tout the elimination of arthritis pain after simply applying a substance on the skin.

Pain rubs resembling aspirin are the first type of pain relief cream for arthritis. These creams are also called topical analgesics, and they have the potential to not only reduce pain but also to reduce joint inflammation. Aspirin-like pain rubs contain salicylates, which are also found in aspirin. Examples of such treatments include Sportscreme, Bengay, Mobisyl, and Aspercreme.

Another option within the realm of pain relief creams for arthritis is applications that make the skin feel cold or hot. These devices are known to only provide temporary pain relief, as the heat or coldness that they cause the body to feel is meant to distract from pain. These products contain ingredients like eucalyptus, menthol, and oil of wintergreen. One of the most common examples is the Icy Hot Patch.

Creams made using chili pepper seeds also have claimed to provide relief for arthritis pain. The concept behind these creams is that they deprive the nerve cells of substance P, which plays a role in sending pain messages to the brain. These creams are typically effective only on joints that are relatively close to the surface, such as the knees, and they need to be applied regularly for several weeks before they are effective. Examples of this form of arthritis pain relief cream include Zostrix, ArthriCare, and Capzasin.

Prescription Verses Over The Counter

For those who want to give cream a try, the chances of meeting with success are greater if a prescription is obtained from a doctor. These are more likely to provide pain relief for a longer amount of time. Products like Licoderm and Voltaren Gel are common prescription gels that have worked successfully.

Coming To A Conclusion...

In the end, while creams have the potential to provide a temporary relief for arthritis pain, there is little that they can do in the long run.
