When Bleeding During Pregnancy Is Something To Worry About

While spotting during your pregnancy is a fairly normal occurrence, heavy bleeding during pregnancy is not. Anytime you experience bleeding during pregnancy, you should always call your doctor immediately, no matter how light it may be. And always listen to your own body. People tend to underestimate a woman's ability to detect when something is wrong with her body. If you feel that something "just isn't quite right," make an appointment with your doctor immediately to discuss your concerns.

Heavy bleeding during pregnancy can be a warning sign of many types of pregnancy complications, from miscarriage to placental complications. Here we will discuss the most common complications that can cause bleeding during pregnancy, and the possible treatments thereof.

Placental Complications

Heavy bleeding during pregnancy can be caused by several placental complications the most common are Placental Abruption and Placenta Previa. Placental Abruption is a condition where the placenta abruptly disengages itself from the uterine wall. It is generally brought on by an extreme trauma, such as a car accident or a fall, and should be tended to by your physician immediately.

Depending on the amount of separation, there are several options for treatment of placental abruption. If the separation is minor, you may be allowed to continue your pregnancy to term with close supervision; or, for a more severe separation, the doctor may either induce labour, or perform an emergency cesarean section.

Placenta Previa, a condition in which the placenta shifts and partially or fully covers the cervix, can also cause bleeding during pregnancy. Placenta Previa is most often brought on by over exerting yourself, and possibly even by having intercourse while pregnant. It is a much less severe a condition than Placental Abruption, but you can expect to be monitored very closely during the remainder of your pregnancy, and may even be put under observation in the hospital.

Of course, the worst thing that could happen to any parent is for a complication to end in a miscarriage. But it is vital to remember that if you do miscarry, even if you experience no bleeding during pregnancy, it is not your fault. Too often women blame themselves for a situation that is entirely out of their control. If you do experience a miscarriage, seek professional help, or the comfort of a close friend to help you get through it.

No matter how heavy or light bleeding during pregnancy you may experience, always call your doctor immediately if you experience anything out of the ordinary while you are pregnant. Even if it turns out that your concerns were nothing to be worried about at all, pregnancy can be stressful enough without having to worry about any bleeding during pregnancy.
