Looking at Possible Conditions that Cause Insomnia

Many people suffer from insomnia and dismiss it as normal and temporary. What happens when you have been suffering from insomnia for more than a week? Is it chronic insomnia? Transient insomnia can last for about three to four week.

What this means is that it is temporary and after this period you will most probably go back to your normal sleep patterns. If you are experiencing chronic insomnia that continues no matter what you do to your sleeping environment then you could be suffering from one of the medical conditions that cause insomnia.

Medical Conditions

Alcoholism is one of the conditions that cause insomnia. A lot of people have a few drinks thinking that it will help them sleep a little easier. The truth is that alcohol can make sleep disorders worse and may be masking the real cause of insomnia. Alcohol causes sleep fragmentation, you sleep for short burst, which will disrupt your sleep cycle. Many alcoholics suffer from insomnia.

Conditions that cause insomnia are often related to neurological disorders of some kind. Alzheimer's disease is one of the neurological conditions that cause insomnia. This is because people suffering from Alzheimer's tend to get upset or agitated when the sun sets. This makes going to sleep extremely difficult.

Asthma is one of the diseases that cause insomnia. This is because the symptoms of asthma tend to get worse at night. Being unable to breathe properly or experiencing shortness of breath will make it hard to sleep. To add to the problem many asthma medications will actually cause insomnia.

Heartburn is a very uncomfortable condition and one of the conditions that cause insomnia. It can be painful when you are having an acid reflux attack this in turn will cause severe discomfort when you are trying to sleep. It's no wonder that heartburn is listed as one of the conditions that cause insomnia.

Anxiety, bipolar, and depression are all mood disorders that can cause you to experience insomnia. Part of the problem is down to chemical imbalances that cause these mood disorders. Another thing that contributes to insomnia is causes of stress in daily life, whether emotional or financial.

If you find that you suffer from any of these conditions then you might want to talk to your healthcare provider about ways to combat your insomnia. Changing your medication or the time that you take it could help you to sleep at night. In some cases treating your medical condition may be the answer to treating your insomnia.
