Clear Vision: Contact Lenses and Dry Eyes

Today there are many styles and brands of contact lenses to choose from. Contact lenses are specialized and contact lens wearers with astigmatism, dry eyes, and multifocal prescriptions can find comfortable contact lenses to correct their vision. There are many brands that claim they are appropriate for dry and sensitive eyes. This article will focus on contact lenses and dry eyes and will identify the best brand for dry eyes.

Dry eyes are the most common complaint of contact lens wearers. Long term use of contact lenses and dry eyes are commonly related. Eyes can become so sensitive and irritated that they develop dry eye syndrome. This disorder can be caused by diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and diabetes. It can also be caused by allergies, living in a dry climate, use of medications like antihistamines which can dehydrate the body and by long term use of contact lenses. Dry eye syndrome's symptoms include: dryness, burning, itching, and a reduction in tear production. You can be evaluated for dry eye syndrome by your eye doctor. Treatment involves prescription eye drops that keep the eye lubricated and/or help the eye create more tears. Contact lenses cannot be placed in the eye until at least 15 minutes after prescription eye drops are used.

Acuvue Contact Lenses and Dry Eyes

One of the most popular brands of contact lenses for dry eyes is Acuvue. Acuvue Oasys with Hydraclear Plus and Acuvue 1 Day Moist are the two main contact lenses on the market that specifically target dry eyes. Acuvue Oasys with Hydraclear Plus reduces the need for rewetting drops, protects eyes from environmental conditions, consists of a wetter, smoother contact lens, and blocks harmful UV rays. Acuvue 1 Day Moist are one-day disposable contact lenses that lock in a moisture rich ingredient that keeps eyes feeling comfortable and contacts feeling smooth and moist all day. There is no need for eye drops or cleaning and 1 Day Moist contact lenses are good for allergy sufferers. Contact lenses and dry eyes can work together thanks to Acuvue products.

It is important to note that even though Acuvue contact lenses and dry eyes can be a good match, dry eye syndrome does not resolve in all contact lens wearers. It may be necessary for those who can no longer wear contact lenses to search for a new method of vision correction, whether that be eyeglasses, Lasik eye surgery, or other surgical or laser vision correction procedures.
