Some Facts Related To Dentistry As A Medical Profession

The history of dentistry can be traced back some nine thousand years back and the ancient Indian civilizations of the Indus Valley as well as Harappan periods that date back to 3300 B.C. were conversant with medicine as well as dentistry. In fact, it has been found that Stone Age humans that lived in India and Pakistan nine thousand years back were given to using dental drills that were constructed from flint.

Dentistry is also referred to as dental surgery and it is both an art as well as science that studies ways and means of preventing, diagnosing as well as treating diseases, conditions and also disorders related to oral cavities and more. Even though dentists often perform surgery there is other work too that they do such as treating diseases affecting oral cavities.

General As Well As Specialty Dentistry

In fact, when you consider dentistry in general it is the only field of dentistry that is non-specialty, and in general, dentists are not given to practicing any special discipline in such a form of dentistry; rather, they will offer patients general care within certain specific disciplines. That is not to say that dentists don't specialize in other specialty areas such as endodontics, surgery, and even orthodontics and more. In fact, that is what helps differentiate between different dentists who will have different skill levels though each dentist must have an acceptable degree of skill in different disciplines and then be able to choose the ones that they want to do on their own, and for others, they will generally refer patients to another specialist.

In any case, dentistry does mean that a dentist who practices generally will be able to do restoration, prosthetic and also routine endodontic as well as periodontal therapies as too straightforward exodontias and finally, will perform examinations as well.

Besides dentistry of the general kind, there is also specialized dentistry which in the United States as well as in Canada and Australia has nine recognized specialties, and in order to become a specialist there is need for the dentist to train in advanced graduate training programs or even in a residency.

There is also geriatric dentistry that is sometimes even referred to as geriodontics and it deals with delivering dental care to elderly people and includes diagnosing, preventing as well as treating problems dealing with ageing that happens in due course of life and also to study and treat diseases that are related to aging.
