The Key to Coping with Fertility Problems

It happens to one in every six couples. You think that the time has come for you to begin your family and the excitement begins to build. You spend time thinking about names, visualizing the perfect nursery and discussing your child rearing philosophies. You read books about pregnancy, baby care and raising kids. You wait, and you wait - and still, nothing happens. One month turns into six, and then a full year passes and conception still has not occurred. Fertility problems are the culprit, and you begin the quest for a child at your doctor's office in hopes that this will be the solution that you have been looking for. Sometimes the answer comes very quickly, and other times it may not come at all. How do you deal with the stress and frustration of fertility problems?

Get Support

Friends and family can be a wonderful support system as you are dealing with your fertility problems, but these folks probably don't understand exactly what you are going through. It is a good idea to find a support group that will join couples who share the pain of fertility problems, to give you a forum to discuss feelings, learn coping strategies and exchange information. Resolve is a national organization with chapters in many cities and states, and it may be a good starting point to find the support that you need. You can also ask your doctor for information about support groups for people with fertility problems. This can be a positive first step in taking control of your life by learning to manage your infertility.

Learn Coping Strategies

There are few things in life more stressful than fertility problems. Since stress can create plenty of physical ills of its own, it is a good idea to learn how to manage your stress symptoms. There are many options in stress management that can help people who are dealing with fertility problems including exercise, counseling and massage. Keep in mind that while you are going through such a difficult time of life, a little indulgence can go a long way. Treat yourselves to a nice dinner out or a weekend trip together. Once your fertility problems are a thing of the past and baby makes three, you won't be able to indulge yourselves in this way very often.

Work with your Doctor

You will undoubtedly find that as you go through your fertility problems, you will be seeing your doctor at least as often as your husband for a while. Make the most of that time by asking questions and discussing concerns as they arise. It can also be helpful to do your own research on your fertility problems by surfing the Internet or spending an afternoon at the library. By educating yourself about your fertility problems, you may find that you feel more in control of your situation.

Fertility problems are a difficult challenge to overcome, but with a few strategies for dealing with the stress and the frustration you will be able to make it through.
