Available Fertility Treatment Options

Fertility treatments are available for numerous causes of infertility. The diagnosis of why a woman is unable to become pregnant is crucial because the proper diagnosis will give your doctor the information he requires in order to suggest the appropriate treatment. Sometimes you will be given some options and you may have to choose between taking fertility drugs and having an operation. There are a variety of fertility treatments to learn about and you should be aware that treatments for infertility problems are typically very expensive.

Drugs for Infertility Problems

If the medical tests show that you are having difficulties with ovulation your doctor will probably suggest you take fertility drugs. These drugs such as Clomid are able to stimulate the ovaries and cause a woman to produce one or more ova in each of her cycles. If you are having ovulation problems due to polycystic ovary syndrome your physician might recommend you take a drug named Metformin along with Clomid.

If men are having problems with fertility there are drugs available to increase their level of fertility.

In -Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

If blockages or damage of the fallopian tubes are causing your infertility problems your doctor will probably suggest using IVF for your fertility treatment. Your doctor may also prescribe IVF treatments if your partner has an abnormal sperm count or if endometriosis is preventing you from becoming pregnant. IVF fertilizes the egg outside of a woman's body and after the process has concluded the egg is placed inside the woman's uterus.

Artificial Insemination Can Be Useful

If a woman's partner has a low sperm count or a large amount of abnormal sperm, artificial insemination can be used as a fertility treatment to help a woman become pregnant. The sperm undergoes a process in the laboratory to improve the possibility of a woman becoming pregnant. A large amount of the treated sperm is then placed into the uterus.

Surgery

Surgery is primarily used if there is blockage of the fallopian tubes. If the blockage is successfully removed a couple may make a baby without drugs or other treatments. Surgery is sometimes recommended for men if there is a blockage in their sperm ducts.

Gamete Intra -Fallopian transfer also known as GIFT is a fertility treatment that is similar to IVF however the fertilization process occurs in the woman's body. ZIFT is a treatment that is also similar to IVF however the embryo is put directly into a woman's fallopian tubes. ICSI is a procedure in which a single sperm is inserted into the woman's egg.

Sometimes doctors recommend donor eggs, donor sperm and sometimes donated embryos in order to help a woman become pregnant. In most states there are laws that restrict the use of donated sperm, eggs and embryos. There are a variety of fertility treatments available and check with your doctor to learn which treatments are best for you.
