Avoiding Foods High in Cholesterol

Cholesterol is everywhere when you eat any meal there are chances you are introducing cholesterol in your body. Your body naturally produces cholesterol and does not need any extra cholesterol from the food you eat. Eating foods high in cholesterol regularly can spell trouble for your body.

When you learn more about cholesterol you will see that the easiest way to reduce bad cholesterol levels in your body is to avoid foods high in cholesterol. It may surprise you how the little changes in your diet can make a big difference. It doesn't take much effort and you will probably not realize the difference.

Butter

If you love baking then you know the importance of using good ingredients. Butter is one of those things that we use without thinking. Whether it's slathered onto toast, melted into a sauce, or mixed into cake batter we use it all the time. Butter is one of those foods high in cholesterol.

It commits two cholesterol crimes; it has saturated fat and cholesterol. The presence of both contributes to higher blood cholesterol levels. You can use non-hydrogenated margarine in place of butter and you probably won't taste the difference.

Saturated Fats

When you are looking at your diet and choosing what foods high in cholesterol to cut you should probably look at the content of saturated fat in your food first. Although foods high in cholesterol can cause some people to experience a soar in cholesterol levels even in small amounts the content of saturated fat is more important.

Meat products are a common culprit, containing both high cholesterol and saturated fats. Choose leaner cuts of meat and trim any visible fat before cooking. Switching to poultry such as chicken and turkey in place of steaks and pork can help you avoid foods high in cholesterol. It's important however that you remove the skin on any poultry dish.

You can still enjoy beef and pork in your diet by choosing leaner cuts. If you want to eat pork then choose to eat pork tenderloin or loin chops. Flank, eye of round, and top round roast are just some of the cuts that you can choose when looking at leaner cuts of beef.

In most cases you don't have to completely change your diet. Small substitutions like margarine instead of butter, low fat yogurt, leaner cuts of meat, and smaller portions for everything are great ways to live a healthier lifestyle.
