Good Prenatal Care May Prevent A High Risk PregnancyPre-Existing Problems There are factors that will present themselves before a woman becomes pregnant which can result in a high risk pregnancy. These risk factors include; overweight or underweight, young or old maternal age, having previous problems during pregnancy and pre-existing health conditions such as high blood pressure, HIV and diabetes. All of these conditions can be treated easily during pregnancy without fatal outcomes if the mother follows her physician's instructions implicitly. Of course, this also means committing to regular prenatal doctor visits, good nutrition and general well being. Gestational Diabetes Diabetes is one high risk pregnancy condition which can be treated successfully to prevent an adverse effect on the newborn infant. A woman who has never had diabetes could come down with diabetes during her pregnancy. This happens most often with older women pregnancies and will result in a high risk pregnancy for these women. This type of diabetes is called gestational diabetes and will disappear as soon as the baby is born and never return again. It is usually controlled by diet and, when needed, insulin shots. It is very important for women who have gestational diabetes to regularly visit their doctor in order to have a healthy baby. Women who do not have any prenatal care with gestational diabetes will end up with unhealthy large babies. One of the other conditions which may cause a high risk pregnancy is preeclampsia, which is a syndrome that includes high blood pressure, urinary protein and changes in blood levels of liver enzymes. With treatment, women will have healthy babies and without treatment, the condition can be fatal to both mother and baby. HIV/AIDS is another high risk pregnancy condition which can be transmitted from mother to baby. There are now effective ways to prevent this from happening with proper prenatal care. The list goes on for high risk pregnancies, but with proper prenatal care a woman can, in most cases, be assured of having a healthy and happy baby. |
