How To Manage Stress And Regain Your Sanity



Stress it never ends and it can make us feel as though we are running as fast as we can while at the same time getting further and further behind. We have the gadgets, the Blackberries, the cell phones, the computers and GPS---all the things we need to keep up with our increasingly fast-past world. Yet it is never enough. The greater our ability to multi-task, the more we take on. And when we take on more, the stress continues to build. So how do we manage stress and take back our lives?

Too Little Stress

Stress is as necessary to a fulfilling life as air, water and food. Too much stress can make us anxious, irritable and dreading. While too little stress, can leave us bored and depressed. The ideal is to learn how to manage the stress in our lives to our advantage.

To do that, we must first take an inventory. We need to pay attention to times when we are bored and depressed and recognize that we need more stimulation, more stress in our lives. Our goal, then, is to determine to how to bring enough manageable stress into our life to eliminate the boredom and the depression. Perhaps you could take up a hobby, or take a class, or begin volunteering. Maybe you want to have friends over more often by setting up a weekly or monthly game night.



Too Much Stress

Maybe you have too much stress in your life. Maybe there is just too much to do and not enough of you to go around. In this instance the inventory again comes in handy. Assess what you can reasonably do and delegate or negotiate the rest. Keep a journal and write about your stress studies have shown the writing about our stress is a successful method for managing it.

How well we manage stress often depends on how well we are taking care of our body. Let good nutrition and regular exercise be key components of how you manage stress. Avoid alcohol and caffeine during stressful periods.

Make time for laughter and friends. Take a break from the treadmill of work, school, kids and family to spend an evening out with friends. It will energize and refresh you and recharge your batteries. Always be sure to include time out with friends, when you are looking at how to manage stress.

The goal of stress management should be to create balance. How we manage stress, determines what we will need to do to reach that balance.
