The Advancements of Laser Eye Surgery

Over two hundred years ago, Benjamin Franklin devised a way to combine glasses designed for the near sighted with glasses designed for the far sighted and the end result was a pair of bifocals. Today, such glasses are still manufactured and have become a symbol of the advances in eye care that can occur when a sharp individual puts his or her mind to creating advancements in a field that sometimes appears less dynamic than one would assume. Over the course of the last 15 years, there has been a dramatic advancement in the world of eye care and vision enhancement and this has come in the form of laser eye surgery.

Fear of Laser Eye Surgery?

Despite the tremendous advantages that laser eye surgery offers there are still those who remains somewhat skeptical about undergoing laser eye surgery. This is somewhat understandable as people should have concern about any surgical procedure regardless of the type of surgery that it is or how safe. Unfortunately, some of this concern reaches points of alarmism mainly because people do not have a clear idea or knowledge base on the subject. As such, there is quite a bit of unfounded fear as to undergoing laser eye surgery.

How Laser Eye Surgery Works

Laser eye surgery, while an advanced medical procedure, remains a relatively easy procedure to perform. What the procedure entails is, is the reshaping of the cornea through the removal of bits of tissue. In doing this, the cornea and, for that matter, the person himself is "freed" of the vision problem that had previously plagued him. The surgery is a relatively simple procedure to perform and does not require a hospital stay nor does it come with a variety of complications as is often the case when it comes to other elective procedures such as plastic surgery.

Often, people will opt to have intensive laser eye surgery performed so as to restore a sense of freedom that may possibly be inhibited by a condition that requires the wearing of glasses and contact lenses. Conversely, many people may opt not to have the procedure performed due to the fact that a recovery period may slow down their active lifestyle. Such a concern is misplaced mainly because the shelf time for recovery is minimal and the procedure overall is not a debilitating one. This is a major reason why the procedure remains as popular as it is.
