Learning About Laser Eye Surgery Technology

Laser eye surgery technology is something that is imperative to learn and understand about, especially considering the dramatic popularity of the procedure in today's world. The purpose of it is to reduce a person's need or dependency on glasses or contact lenses, and its success rate is incredibly high.

Laser eye surgery technology is incredibly advanced, and is definitely not something that ever could have been expected even just a few years ago. Laser eye surgery technology is by far the most advanced and sophisticated technology in terms of vision correction in the world, and literally hundreds of thousands of people have already taken advantage of this technology and had the procedure done.

The Details of Laser Eye Surgery Technology

The technology involved here is quite complex, but the procedure itself is surprisingly simple. This surgery is a type of refractive laser eye surgery, and is used for correcting vision problems such as astigmatism, hyperopia and nearsightedness.

The technology involved with this procedure was actually introduced in the 1950s by a man named Jose Barraquer, who developed the very first microkeratome, which is what was used to cut thin flaps in the cornea and what really began the entire laser eye surgery revolution.

Over time more and more developments and discoveries were added on to this existing technology, and soon laser eye surgery technology became more advanced than ever, particularly after the age of computers was onset.

The Actual Procedure

There are many issues that need to be taken into serious consideration in terms of the actual procedure itself. For one, patients who were using contact lenses before the procedure are typically instructed to remove them and stop wearing them a week or two before the surgery, basically so that their eyes can return as much to normal as possible.

The operation is performed while the patient is awake and mobile, although a mild sedative is usually given to help them relax and to keep them free from pain as much as possible during the procedure. There are only really two steps involved in the procedure, the first involving the creation of a flap on the surface of the corneal tissue.

The second step is to use an excimer laser to remodel the corneal stroma, and during this step the patient's vision will often become quite blurry as a result, at least for the time being while the flap is lifted.

The recovery time of the procedure is incredibly quick, usually just a day or two, and this is one of the most advantageous features of the laser eye surgery technology involved here.
