Managing Stress: Your Health May Depend On ItConsult A Health Professional While there are many strategies to self manage stress, it is always an excellent idea to consult with your doctor. The doctor can alert you to other conditions in your body that are reacting to stress, as well as make some recommendations that can help you manage stress more effectively. Become A Warrior Of Self-Protection Take some time out and look at the stressors in your life--maybe you are over-scheduled, maybe there is a deadline crunch at work. Productive stress management begins with knowing what the stressors are, and then looking for alternative ways to meet the challenges they present. If your issue is taking on too much, practice saying no. Practice it in the mirror, on your way home for work or while putting on your makeup. Practice, practice, practice& Some stressors cannot be eliminated by the simple word no. So for those situations where you know you will be dealing with difficult people or difficult situations, do a rehearsal visualization. Visualization is an excellent vehicle for how to manage stress. Imagine the stressful situation at it's worst, and then imagine yourself being calm and reasonable. Imagine the situation resulting in a win/win situation. Spend Time With Friends Whether you take the time to manage your stress by talking it out with your friends or you just taking a much-needed time out, spending time with friends is a valuable stress reducer. Isolation feeds stress, whereas companionship provides a sense of calm and well being. Learn To Let Go Letting go is both the hardest and easiest way to manage stress. The trick is to know how to employ it. Learn to see clearly what you have control over what you can actually do focus on that, and let go of the rest. Recognize that worrying and stressing about situations that may or may not happen, or conditions over which you have no control, is unnecessarily adding to your stress. Let it go. No matter how you manage your stress, whether you use all or some of these techniques, the goal is to have stress work for you and not against you. |
