How to Measure Your Blood Pressure

It's a good idea to learn how to measure your own blood pressure. Since blood pressure reading fluctuate after exercise, stress, or upon waking up in the morning, learning this skill will give you more control over your health as you easily monitor your pressure in the comfort of your own home. Additionally, if you keep a record of your readings, your doctor will be able to get a clearer picture of your overall blood pressure measurements.

Choosing a Blood Pressure Monitor

There are many blood pressure monitors on the market, ranging in price as well as in different features. Many health care professionals recommend the type of monitor that measures blood pressure from the top of the arm instead of the wrist or finger. Measuring blood pressure from the wrist or finger may not give you an accurate result. Most blood pressure monitors must pass a test for accuracy, usually performed at a testing facility other than the manufacturer. Before purchasing a monitor, check that it has been tested for accuracy. The box should have this information prominently displayed.

How To Measure Blood Pressure

There are several key steps to accurately measure your blood pressure. First of all, it's advisable for you to wear a short sleeve shirt or one that can be rolled up and still be loose on your upper arm. If your arm is already under pressure from your shirt, it will affect the blood pressure reading. Before actually taking the reading, sit quietly and calm your breathing. Take a few minutes to do this. You may get a false higher reading if you are rushing or are nervous about the results. You should be seated so that the arm, which you will use to measure the blood pressure, can rest on a solid surface. This step is critical because the arm must be supported in such a way so that the cuff of the monitor is at the same level as your heart. Be sure this arm is also relaxed and not tensed up. Place the cuff around the upper portion of your arm securely. Don't make it too tight; you should be able to slip two fingers under the cuff. Start the machine and be very quiet during this process. Talking can affect the blood pressure reading. Take two or three readings on each arm and then figure out the average of the results. Keep a chart of your blood pressure readings and note any unusual circumstances that may be going on in your life, like stress, a different exercise program or a new diet. This helps your doctor see the overall picture of your blood pressure readings.
