When Words Are Not Enough: Medicine Prescribed for Anger Management

Anger management is a series of self-control strategies that help people control their emotions and remain non-confrontation. It is not a complete avoidance of anger; everyone is going to feel anger at times. However, anger does not need to lead to violence, whether verbal or physical, and anger management aims to provide individuals with the strategies necessary to approach angry feelings with rational, conscious thought. Therapy, journals, role-playing and classroom lectures help for some individuals, but for others, anger is such a prominent, explosive component of their personalities that there is no time to schedule an appointment. Their anger requires immediately, consistent medication, and this is best achieved through medicine prescribed for anger management. In a world concerned with pills and drugging, for some individuals, medicine prescribed for anger management truly is the only option for living a socially-successful life.

The Tiniest Package

Just as people have different ways in which they deal with their unbalanced emotions and anger, anger and emotions have different faces. While anger management is an umbrella term for various self-control strategies, it can be used for a variety of emotions that can lead to violence outbursts, including depression, anxiety, mania and insomnia. When these feelings get out of control, and when weekly therapy sessions or other psychological techniques fail, medicine prescribed for anger management becomes the difference between aggression and peace. For both the individual and his or her friends and family, these pills promote a safe environment and a more level situation.

In order to decide which medicine prescribed for anger management is best for an individual, doctors must first decide the source of his or her anger. People are rarely angry for the sake of being angry; aggression is usually a visible manifestation of some deeper psychological problem. Depression, psychosis, anxiety, drug addiction and mania are all psychological conditions that can include components of anger, and the pills prescribed to lessen the symptoms of these disorders will often lessen the anger. For this reason, however, medicine prescribed for anger management is not universal; while a mood stabilizer or anti-seizure medication may be used for those individuals with bipolar disorder, depressed people could become more violent with these medications.

Like all medications, medicine prescribed for anger management come with side-effects. Many heavy-dose mood stabilizers can damage the liver and require weekly blood tests to ensure the right level of medication in the blood. Others are highly addictive, and for individuals already struggling with emotional shortcomings, drug addiction will only add to the problem. However, for individuals who cannot succeed under normal anger management curriculum, medicine prescribed for anger management may be worth these risks. Otherwise, a normal life, with normal social interactions, will be impossible.
