January Is National Eye Care Month

In case you are wondering which nation has January as National Eye Care Month, it's America. Relax & you don't need to get gifts, send out cards or listen to National Eye Care Month muzak. But you can give yourself a gift by being sure your eyes are all right. Many eye conditions can be treated if caught early enough. Some eye problems require an eye doctor rather than your regular doctor. It's best to choose an eye doctor before you actually need to go to one.

Why A Whole Month?

Many organizations and charities have discovered that having a national day, week or month can really help give their cause a free publicity. Some of these are admittedly silly (National Macaroni And Cheese Day is July 14), but for the purposes of caring for your health, these days, weeks and months provide great reminders to get a check up.

By law in most countries, you car needs to be inspected once a year. Without these annual inspections (called MOT's in England), there would be a lot of cars on the streets just ready to break down and cause accidents. Although we grumble at the annual cost and scheduling conflicts, in the long run it probably saves more money and lives.

If we take such great care of our cars by getting them checked out at least once a year, then why not our eyes? One of the goals for National Eye Care Month is that people take the time in January to set up an appointment with their eye doctor, or find one if they currently do not have one. Since many eye doctors have incredibly busy schedules, you may need to book an appointment months in advance.

Other Ways To Celebrate

Some days you really need very little excuse to have some sort of celebration. There are many different ways to celebrate. Some people like to celebrate National Eye Care Month is to donate old pairs of glasses to charity. They can be reading glasses or prescription glasses or even bifocals. Although many people need glasses, not everyone can afford them. Instead of gathering dist, your old glasses can help a needy person see.

Some people also like to make a donation to one eye-related cause or another as their way of celebrating National Eye Care Month. Arguably, they might do this in order to avoid seeing an eye doctor, themselves, but at least their hearts are in the right place.
