Does Poor Nutrition Cause Obesity?

All around the world, people are getting fatter and fatter. Even the nations that never before had to worry about obesity, such as China, Japan and even Korea, are now seeing an epidemic. It seems that nobody is safe from the ever expanding waistline. So what is making us so fat as a species? The answer lies in one two words: poor nutrition. Nutrition is something that we are severely lacking when it comes to what we eat, how much we eat and when we eat. With fast food restaurants on nearly every corner, portion sizes steadily getting out of control and even the types of food becoming more fat, sugar and preservative laden, it's no wonder we can no longer see our own feet. There is a solution, however, and it can only come from nutrition knowledge.

Food Is Fuel

We are so focused these days on food and the taste of it, and how much of it we get, that we forget that food is merely fuel for us. Food gives us the energy we need to get through our days. When we have too much fuel, it gets stored as fat. Fat isn't our body's way of getting back at us or its way of being spiteful, our body's are merely acting as they were designed to do. Fat provides heat when we're cold, it provides insulation to our bones and internal organs and even our muscles and it is a way of preventing starvation. When we eat too much, and we don't burn off those calories with exercise or everyday activities, the excess gets turned into fat. With all that we're eating these days, that fat is accumulating at a rapid rate.

Balance Is Key

Good nutrition is all about balance. You don't have to give up your favorite foods, treats and desserts. You do, however, have to balance these out so that you don't get too overweight. You should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean meats and you should even take some nutrition supplements such as vitamins. Use your treats and desserts as rewards for yourself for doing so well on your nutrition throughout the week. You can maintain a healthy weight by eating well for an entire week and then splurging one or even two days during that week; provided that you burn off the excess calories with exercise.

If You're Overweight

If you're already overweight and you want to lose that weight, proper nutrition along with exercise is the only way to do it. If you eat a balanced diet, eat smaller meals more often (such as six meals per day) and get at least thirty minutes of exercise three to five times per week, that weight will come off in no time. There is no easy fix for weight loss. It does take work. However, you don't have to do like the commercials and infomercials show; where everyone's sweating and panting until they die. A few walks around the block are sufficient to burn enough calories to help you lose weight as long as your nutrition is balanced.
