What do People Under Hypnosis Feel?

You have seen plenty of mass hypnosis shows where people perform awesome feats when they are hypnotized. Most magic shows have one or two very impressive items based on hypnosis. Most of the time, the people under hypnosis, when they wake up seem to be perfectly oblivious of what happened to them or what they did. That brings about the question of what do the people under hypnosis feel. Are they in a trance that completely disconnects them from reality or is this a façade for the public for greater impact of the magic trick?

A Hypnotized Person is Always in Control of Self

It is a great myth that people under hypnosis loose control of themselves and do as they are bid by the hypnotist. On the contrary, the person is actually far more alert than when they are awake because hypnotism puts them into contact with their sub-consciousness.

You could compare hypnosis with the following imagery - let us say you have your television set in the bedroom and you are in the drawing room discussion certain matters with friends while all the time being aware of what it is playing on TV. You then go to the bedroom, close the door and pull a chair in front of the TV fully paying attention to what it says shutting off everything else. You are now hearing the TV plain and clear better then anytime before.

This is how people under hypnosis feel - in complete contact with their inner selves. This is why they are so open to suggestions for improvement and also the reason why it succeeds to motivate better than any other method known to human kind.

At no time would any of the people under hypnosis act against their will - such as undressing or divulging any type of information that they would not otherwise do. When they do express their feelings it is because they become aware of certain reasons that motivate their present behavior - say, panic attacks, sexual dysfunction, compulsive habits, low self-esteem and so on. Once they understand the underlying reason, it is easier for them to move on and improve their life.

Another great myth about people under hypnosis is that unless they are helped out by the hypnotist they would never be able to come out of their trance or in other words they would stay hypnotized until the hypnotist breaks the trance. This is not true; people under hypnosis can snap out of their trance either by going to sleep or by waking up with or without the help of the hypnotist.
