Eating For Two Pregnancy Nutrition Is The Key To A Healthy Baby

Once you find out that you are pregnant, there will be many things that need to be done in order to prepare for the arrival of the new baby. However, one of your more immediate focuses should be pregnancy nutrition. Pregnancy nutrition is extremely important; it affects not only the health of the mother, but the health of the baby as well.

How Much Food?

You know that you need to gain weight when you are pregnant (typically 25-35 pounds). However, how much food does that require you to add to your daily intake? For most women, this number means adding about 300 calories to their pre-pregnancy diet. This can easily be accomplished by adding a large snack to your day. However, make sure that you aren't adding junk to your diet. The nutritious value of the food is just as important.

Foods To Avoid When You're Pregnant

There are certain foods that you should avoid when you're pregnant. Although you might have eaten them before you became pregnant, many of these foods have bacteria or pollutants that could harm your baby. These foods include: unpasteurized products, soft cheeses (feta, brie), raw eggs, cookie batter, Caesar dressing, sushi, deli meat, undercooked meat, and pates.

Other foods don't contain harmful ingredients, but are classified as refined carbohydrates that could lead to too much weight gain. These foods include: cookies, white bread, syrup, white rice, pretzels, and cakes.

Handling Food For Safety

Most people try to handle their food as safely as possible. However, it is even more important that you follow food safety guidelines while you are pregnant. Not handling food carefully could result in contamination of the food.

Make sure you wash your hands with soap before handling raw fish, meat, or poultry. Additionally, all fruits and vegetables should be washed thoroughly before they are eaten. Make sure that the knife and cutting board you use are clean, and wash them after cutting raw foods. If you do not cook something immediately, refrigerate it promptly.

What's Up, Doc?

If you are confused about pregnancy nutrition or about the types of food you should be eating, you should consult your doctor. They will be able to give you more specific guidelines regarding pregnancy nutrition, and will also be able to give you a more accurate idea of how many calories you should be consuming each day.

Know Your Nutrition

Pregnancy nutrition is a major factor in the health of the baby. It might be difficult to get used to a new diet; however, your efforts are not in vain. By sticking to a nutritious diet, you will be ensuring both your own health and the health of your brand new baby.
