Why Smoking During Pregnancy is Such a Bad Idea

Smoking is one of the worst possible habits that you can have, and especially so when you are pregnant. After all, you now have this little being inside of you who, if you are a smoker, is going to have to deal with all the negative effects of smoking, which is obviously incredibly negative.

Reasons to Avoid Smoking During Pregnancy

There is a myriad of reasons as to why you should avoid smoking during pregnancy, and for one, smoking nearly doubles a woman's risk of having a low birth weight or premature baby, and in fact, in the year 2002 alone, 12.2. percent of babies who were born to smokers in the United States were of low birth weight, compared to 7.5 percent of babies to nonsmokers.

The more than a woman is smoking during pregnancy, the greater overall risk to the baby, however if a woman were to stop smoking before the end of the first trimester of her pregnancy, than it is thought that she is no more likely to have a low birth weight baby than a woman who had never smoked at all, and this is why it is so crucial that if you are a smoker and you find out you are pregnant you make sure that you quit before the beginning of your second trimester.

Smoking during pregnancy has been known to cause an array of different complications in the pregnancy, and for one smoking has appeared to double a woman's risk of developing placental problems, including placenta previa, and placental abruption, for example, both of which can result in heavy bleeding during the delivery that can absolutely endanger both mother and baby.

Smoking during pregnancy also appears to increase the risk of premature rupture of the membranes, again resulting in a premature baby, which can be incredibly harmful and dangerous to both mother and baby.

How to Quit Smoking

There are a ton of different quit smoking products that are available for you to use, however because you are pregnant your options are going to be narrowed down somewhat. If you can quit cold turkey then of course this is the best possible method, however if you need help then it is worth it for you to use a stop smoking product and quit smoking rather than continue.

Talk to your doctor as soon as you find out you are pregnant if you are a smoker, as they will be able to work together with you and come up with the best possible idea for you and your particular case.
